After France banned the sale of Apple’s iPhone 12 devices due to electromagnetic radiation concerns, French authorities received a software update from the technology giant.

Apple faces a September 27 deadline to implement the changes after French regulators ordered it to halt sales of older iPhone 12 models due to excessive electromagnetic emissions. French authorities have warned that the product could be recalled if Apple does not provide a software solution to solve the radiation problem.

Following the dispute, Apple decided to release a software update to address French regulators’ concerns. However, while officials are reviewing the software patch, an official notification from the ministry confirming compliance with the update is currently awaited.

The decision of French authorities to suspend sales of iPhone 12 models was taken after tests conducted by the French Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR) showed that the devices exceeded the permissible radiation exposure limits. Specifically, the tests measured a smartphone’s Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), which measures the proportion of radio frequencies absorbed by the user’s body when using the device.

ANFR reported that accredited laboratories found SAR of 5.74 watts per kilogram when the smartphone is kept in a pocket or carried. This exceeded the European standard for SAR, which is set at 4.0 watts per kilogram, especially in such scenarios.

Apple initially disputed France’s findings, arguing that the iPhone 12 had been certified by multiple international organizations to meet global radiation standards. However, after a significant development, Apple finally decided to release a software update that complies with the testing methods used in France.

While French authorities continue to review the software update, the outcome remains unclear and it remains unclear whether iPhone 12 models will be available in the French market in the future.
