The American secret service CIA says it is developing its own AI chatbot to analyze enormous amounts of data.

The Central Intelligence Agency or the US foreign secret service says it is working on its own chatbot with generative AI. The agency does this to better analyze the enormous amounts of data it has to process every day.

With this chatbot, the CIA wants to teach its people how to handle open source data better and hopes that AI will help them process big data. Development is in the hands of the CIA’s own open source enterprise department. The aim is also for other news services to quickly have such an AI chatbot. The system could also go to the FBI, the NSA and the US military.

Randy Nixon, director of AI at the CIA, put it as if he were always looking for the needle in a mountain of needles to indicate how much data his people have to deal with. There is also pressure from China, which has already indicated that it wants to become the world market leader in the field of AI. Huawei is said to have already made significant progress in GPU development. AI and technology are also a “smaller” battle that rages in the larger picture of the rivalry between the two superpowers.

Too slow

In the USA, on the other hand, there is increasingly loud criticism of the slow progress in AI, for example from organizations like the CIA. That should certainly change with this project. In addition to data analysis, the next step is for researchers to ask the system questions, says Nixon.

A notable fact is that the CIA’s model was designed to indicate the source of its information, something commercial systems often do not do adequately. What model the agency uses and what measures are taken to protect privacy were not mentioned. Of course it remains a spy service.
