Chinese hackers who attacked Microsoft’s email platform earlier this year managed to steal thousands emails from US State Department accountsA Senate official told Reuters on Wednesday.
An official who attended a briefing by State Department information technology officials said they told lawmakers that 60 thousand emails were stolen from 10 different State Department accounts.
While the victims were not named, all but one worked in the East Asia and Pacific region, he said.
The aide, who works for Sen. Eric Schmitt, shared details of the briefing on the condition that he not be named.
Allegations that China hacked the State Department, as well as two dozen other, mostly unidentified organizations, have strained already fraught relations between the United States and China; Beijing denies any involvement in espionage.
The hack also brought attention to Microsoft’s huge role in providing IT services to the US government.
“We need to strengthen our defenses against these types of cyberattacks and intrusions in the future,” Schmitt said in a statement shared by an employee in an email sent to Reuters after the briefing.
“We must carefully examine the federal government’s reliance on a single supplier as a possible weakness,” he added.
The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Schmitt’s office did not immediately respond to an interview request. (Reuters).
