An international research team has found the first evidence that the black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy is rotating, as a result of analyzing images obtained as a result of more than 20 years of observations.
reported NHK informs Ukrinform.
It was noted that astronomers using the radio telescope network around the world observed a black hole in the M87 galaxy, located 55 million light years away from Earth.
Scientists drew attention to a flow of matter coming out of the black hole at almost the speed of light. Analysis of the data showed that the jet’s direction changed over a cycle of approximately 11 years.
These data match the results of supercomputer simulations conducted by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.
Astronomers say the discovery is the first direct evidence that a black hole is spinning.
As Ukrinform reports, a group of American astronomers using the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb telescope discovered that: farthest active supermassive black hole.
