A joint Egyptian-German archaeological mission during the reconstruction of the Sahura pyramid in Abisura, Egypt, made a discovery that experts call unprecedented. Eight chambers previously unknown to science were discovered inside the pyramid.

The discovery was reportedly made inside the pyramid of Pharaoh Sakhur, located in the Abusir necropolis south of Giza and north of Saqqara. In ancient times, it was called “the spirit of Sakhur, which is in the light”.

During the investigation, a number of previously undocumented storage facilities were discovered

The unknown structures were found during conservation work carried out by local Egyptologists and experts from the University of Würzburg, led by Egyptologist Mohamed Ismail Khaled. Work started in 2019. The project was designed to strengthen and protect the base of the pyramid. For this reason, it was decided to evacuate the rooms to ensure the stability of the interior and prevent further collapse. As a result, previously unknown internal cameras were discovered.

According to Khaled, its walls were heavily damaged. So the study was used as a scan as well as a visual inspection. The researchers will publish the final results later, but it is already known that they managed to accurately determine the initial dimensions and layout of the “secret” rooms. It is also interesting that one of these cameras was described by the British researcher John Perring in his diary in 1836. And two centuries later, scientists managed to find it.

Sahura – second pharaoh from the 5th dynasty

“This important discovery proves that the observations made during Pering’s research were correct,” emphasized Mohammed Khaled. He added that eight burial chambers were discovered after the passages inside the pyramid were cleared of debris blocking them.

“The discovery sheds new light on the architecture of the pyramid of Pharaoh Sakhur, the second ruler of the Fifth Dynasty (2400 BC) and the first ruler buried at Abusir,” summarizes Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities. Source
