A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched 22 Starlink satellites from Florida’s Space Coast on Friday evening, September 29, and returned to the ship at sea. Falcon 9 lifted off from the Space Force Station at Cape Canaveral today at 10pm ET (September 30, 02:00 GMT).
The first stage of the Falcon 9 returned to Earth for a vertical landing on the SpaceX unmanned spacecraft at sea, approximately 8.5 minutes after launch, as planned.
This was the 10th takeoff and landing of the Falcon 9 first stage, according to SpaceX’s mission statement. The company’s record for reusing the rocket is 17 flights by two different boosters. Meanwhile, 22 Starlink satellites emerged into low Earth orbit (LEO) approximately 65 minutes after launch from the upper assembly of the Falcon 9.
Friday’s mission was SpaceX’s 69th orbital launch of 2023. Approximately 60% of these flights are devoted to the development of the company’s Starlink network.
Currently this mega constellation consists of approximately 4,800 active satellites, and their number will continue to increase in the future. SpaceX has approval to deploy 12,000 spacecraft to LEO and has applied for approval for 30,000 more.
