This is stated in the press release of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), as Ukrinform reports.
“Part of the Martian ‘dust devil’ was captured by the Perseverance rover traveling along the western rim of Jezero Crater on August 30, 2023, the mission’s 899th Martian day,” JPL said. said.
The laboratory added that the video, sped up 20 times, consists of 21 frames taken at four-second intervals by one of the rover’s navigation cameras.
It is stated that dust vortexes on Mars are much weaker and generally smaller than terrestrial hurricanes. Dust devils are one of the mechanisms that move and redistribute dust around Mars.
Scientists study them to better understand the Martian atmosphere and improve weather models.
As Ukrinform reported, Perseverance was sent to Mars along with the Ingenuity helicopter as part of a NASA research mission on February 18, 2021.
One of its missions is to collect rock samples on Mars that will be brought back to Earth by a special joint mission of the European Space Agency and NASA.
