Estonia’s first unmanned research vessel can move independently along a predetermined route. The autonomous navigation range of the sea drone is 300 kilometers.
The ship was designed primarily to study the activity of fish and will be used in the autumn to survey the area where wind farms will be installed in the future.
A marine drone will also begin monitoring the herring population.
According to scientists, similar software can be used on larger ships and for other purposes in the future.
“The first is a hydroacoustic study of herring and algae. Then we plan bottom mapping, water sampling, phytoplankton sampling. The next part is water samples, probably the chemical composition of the water, and we don’t have it yet,” said Markus Vetema, director of the Marine Institute.
As Ukrinform reports, a group of researchers from the University of Haifa (Israel) has developed an autonomous underwater robot to search for fish.
