A denial of service attack, or DDoS, is when excessive traffic is directed to a website, overloading its server and disrupting its operations.
Although the royal website was online at lunchtime on Sunday, it carried out additional security checks before allowing users to log in to the site.
Early on Sunday Royal.uk displayed an error message and blocked people from accessing the website.
Sources stated that it is not currently known who is responsible for the attack, and stated that the attack was not hacked and no system or website content was accessed.
Russian hacker group Killnet claimed responsibility for the attack by posting it on Telegram, but it has not been confirmed that they were behind the attack.
As reported by Ukrinform, Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom was subjected to a DoS attack behind Russian hackers.
