Israeli police arrested a Mexican writer and former diplomat today Andres Roemer, accused of sexual assault by dozens of women and a fugitive from justice in Israel, as well as several extradition requests against him from Mexico.

After his arrest, an Israeli judge will make the final decision on whether to extradite him or not.

Roemer, who lived in Israel for several years and is of Jewish origin, was arrested this morning after the International Department of the Israeli Public Prosecutor’s Office submit a request for his extradition to the Jerusalem District Court, the Israeli Ministry of Justice said in a statement.

In May 2022, Andres Roemer published a video in which he revealed details of the investigation case and admitted that He received the information “not formally, but through mutual friends.”

The author published the name and personal photographs of the applicant. as well as information that is part of the complaint against him. He similarly released the image and personal information of another woman who reported him, and that the capital’s prosecutor’s office kept said information confidential in accordance with protocols for protecting victims of sexual assault.

Roemer was Mexico’s ambassador to UNESCO and was removed from his post in 2016 for not following his country’s position and abstain from voting on a resolution submitted by Arab countries on the Esplanade of Mosques (Jewish Temple Mount), located in occupied East Jerusalem.

Israel criticized the resolution and claimed that he denied any connection between the premises (the third holiest site in Islam and the first for Judaism) and Judaism, limiting the text to consideration of the Al-Aqsa Mosque as a place of Muslim worship.
