Microsoft has discontinued the free upgrade from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10/11, but the upgrade from 10 to 11 remains free. This means people with older systems will now have to pay if they want to upgrade.

Microsoft is closing the upgrade path from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10/11

In the past, some users have tried to get permanent activation during the upgrade, but systems activation tools such as HWIDGEN and MAS will no longer work because Microsoft blocks such requests from its servers. However, through these activations, computers currently running Windows 10/11 will remain active; Microsoft does not take away these licenses.

Currently, Windows 11 version 22H2 can still be activated on virtual machines, but the newer Canary build does not accept activation requests.

Microsoft is also working on a lightweight, web-centric Windows 12 aimed at the education market to compete with Chrome OS. It is expected to be a simpler version of Windows and is expected to be released in 2024. This option will not replace standard Windows but will be an alternative for simpler educational devices. It will have artificial intelligence integration and focus on working with the web, especially Microsoft Edge.

Additionally, Microsoft introduced a major update to Windows 11 by adding Copilot, a new artificial intelligence assistant. Copilot will be available in the sidebar and will help users with a variety of tasks, such as finding recipes and planning trips. The update also gives File Explorer a new look, adds a handwriting feature called Ink Anywhere, and improves the Snipping tool and RGB lighting controls. Additionally, Microsoft 365 users can get Copilot for $30 per month to help with work tasks.
