Physicists Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Kraus and Anne L’Huillet were awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics “for experimental methods that produce attosecond light pulses to study the dynamics of electrons in matter.”

This was reported by Ukrinform with a link to the award page. kh (formerly Twitter).

“The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Kraus and Anna L’Huier “for their experimental methods that produce attosecond pulses of light to study the dynamics of electrons in matter,” the message reads.

As stated on the award website, the three award winners are recognized for experiments that have provided humanity with new tools to explore the world of electrons inside atoms and molecules.

Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Kraus, and Anne L’Huillet demonstrated a way to produce extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure fast processes in which electrons move or change energy.

An attosecond is a unit of time equal to one quintillionth of a second; i.e. 0.00000000000000000001 second.

As reported, Nobel Week, where the 2023 prize winners will be announced, begins in Sweden and Norway. The winners of the awards in the field of chemistry will be announced on Wednesday, and those in the field of literature will be announced on Thursday. The winner of the economics award will be announced on October 9 in Stockholm, Sweden.

The winner of the peacebuilding award will be announced in Oslo, Norway’s capital, on Friday.

The Nobel Prize ceremony will take place at Stockholm City Hall on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
