The winners of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry were American scientists Mungi Bawenda and Louis Bruce, as well as Soviet-American scientist Alexei Yekimov “for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots – very small nanoparticles whose size determines their properties.”
This is reported by Ukrinform with a link to the reward page on the network. kh.
The message said, “The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Mungi Bawendi, Louis Bruce and Oleksiy Yekimov “for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots.”
This year’s prize is for the discovery and development of quantum dots (nanoparticles so small that their size determines their properties), as stated on the award website.
These smallest components of nanotechnology now emit light in televisions and LED lamps and can assist surgeons when removing tumor tissue, among many other things.
“Quantum dots have many fascinating and unusual properties. The important thing is that they have a different color depending on their size,” said Johan Aquist, chairman of the Nobel Committee on Chemistry.
As reported, Nobel Week, where the 2023 prize winners will be announced, continues in Sweden and Norway. Literary awards will be determined on Thursday. The winner of the economics award will be announced on October 9 in Stockholm, Sweden.
The winner of the peacebuilding award will be announced in Oslo, Norway’s capital, on Friday.
The Nobel Prize ceremony will take place at Stockholm City Hall on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
