Google introduces Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro

The wait is over, after months of rumors and leaks, the search engine company has officially unveiled the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, the annual refresh of its smartphones that show us generation after generation that the company takes it very seriously. bet. with devices that gradually and mainly thanks to this extremely positive reviews of their users, are increasing their market share in an industry as competitive and therefore complicated as smartphones.

Pixels haven’t hit the market since their inception, though especially since they started using their own SoC, Google Tensor. compete in the arena of maximum performance, but in that optimization and especially intelligent use of resources and benefits. In this regard, the company was able to play very well the trick that has brought Apple so much success over the years, that is, the absolute synergy between the device and the operating system combined with the applications and services of its ecosystem.

My first in-depth contact (I already “revealed” the previous model, but quite briefly) with the Pixel family was when I reviewed the Pixel 7a, and since then my opinion of them has been extremely positive, which is all the more reason I’ve been waiting for these announcements with special interest. And given what we’ve seen, given that we haven’t been able to test them to make a more accurate assessment, I think Google hit the nail on the head again with the new Pixel 8.

As you can see, considering the technical specifications, it is not a surprise what we expected, given that Google itself has already advanced some points and leaked others in recent months. So we have confirmation that Google has once again opted for a high-end but balanced configuration that does not try to be the first in the raw performance rating, but on the contrary to fine-tune the whole so that the ratio of quality and price shines in its own light.

The first thing we notice about this new Pixel 8 is of course its Actua screen, built on an OLED panel with FullHD+ resolution (1080 x 2400 pixels in 20:9 aspect ratio). As an improvement over its predecessor, we see that this Pixel 8 also offers a variable refresh rate, but in this case it starts at 60 hertz and can reach 120, compared to 90 on the 7. If we add this to its density of 428 dots per inch, up to 1,400 nits in HDR, its 24-bit colors and its contrast ratio > 1,000,000:1, we are without a doubt in front of the most promising screen. And to protect it, Google opted for Gorilla Glass Victus.

Inside, we found what we expected the new generation of the company’s SoC, the Google Tensor G3, an integrated system where, as we already know, brute force is not as important as optimization and specialization, something that makes it shine its own light in tasks such as those related to artificial intelligence. Next to it, we find the security coprocessor Titan M2, which is part of the complete Pixel 8 design from the point of view of security. The device is supplemented with 8 gigabytes of LPDDR5X RAM memory and, according to the user’s choice, 128 or 256 gigabytes of UFS 3.1 storage.

As for its connectivity, at the wireless level we can state dual 5G, with nanoSIM and eSIM, together with WiFi 7 (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz + 6 GHz, MIMO 2×2 + 2×2), which represents a great advance, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and global geolocation, to which we will add more functions of the USB-C port that we find on its lower edge, and which will allow us to transfer data, connect headphones and possibly of course, charge the battery that is responsible for powering the kit, which has a capacity of 4,575 milliamps and is compatible with 30-watt fast charging (50% charge in 30 minutes). According to Google measurements, it is able to provide more than 24 hours of autonomy.

It’s clear we’re talking about the Pixel One of its strong points is the cameras. So this Pixel integrates two elements in its main camera, a wide-angle (82º) with a resolution of 50 megapixels (1.2 μm) with a number F/1.68, along with a 12-megapixel (1.25 μm) ultra-wide (125.8º) f/2.2. It also integrates a single-zone LDAF (laser detection autofocus) sensor, a spectrum and flicker sensor, and optical and electronic image stabilization in wide-angle shooting to improve focus capacity and speed. The front camera is based on an ultra-wide-angle (95º) with a resolution of 10.5 megapixels (1.22 μm) with a no. F/2.2.

The new Google Pixel 8 is already available to reserve, it will be available from October 12 with lichen green, obsidian and pink variants and its price starts at 799 euros.

And we get to the main course, the top of the offer, with which Google once again scores a great goal, that although it comes with a significant increase in price compared to its predecessor, it is undoubtedly at the top of the offer. top smartphones in the industry. One of its strongest points is of course the camera, but we also find new functions such as a temperature sensor, a more than remarkable screen and 12 gigabytes of RAMapart from many other points.

If the one on 8 was remarkable, The screen of this Pixel 8 Pro is typical of the top of the range. It is built OLED panel (LTPO) 6.7 inches, which offers a resolution of 1,344 x 2,992 pixels in an aspect ratio of 20:9 and with a density of 489 dpi. Its refresh rate is adaptive and can range between 1 and 120 Hz, so it offers an adjustment always adapted to specific needs. It shines, never better, with its 1,600 nits (HDR), which can be scaled up to 2,400 nits at the maximum setting, and like the 8, it offers a contrast ratio of > 1,000,000:1, 24-bit color and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

We won’t find much difference between its interior and the 8’s interior as both are powered by Google Tensor G3. In this case, of course, Google jumps to 12 gigabytes of LPDDR5X RAM and configurations with 128 and 256 gigabytes of storage, In this model, the option with 512 gigabytes is added abovewhich, combined with the company’s cloud storage services, seems more than enough for any need.

We don’t see big differences in the connectivity section either, where we find dual 5G, with nanoSIM and eSIM, along with WiFi 7 (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz + 6 GHz, MIMO 2×2 + 2×2), Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and global geolocation and yes as a major difference it also includes a ultra wideband chip to improve accuracy. At the wireless level, we find the expected USB-C port that will allow us to transfer data, connect headphones and, of course, charge the battery that is in charge of powering the assembly, which has a capacity of 5,050 milliamps and is compatible with 30 Watt fast charging.

The front-facing camera is a must-have for the Pixel 8 Pro, just like its predecessors. So we find in this generation a very solid design consisting of three elements, wide-angle with a viewing angle of 82 degrees, 50 megapixels and a f number of 1.68, which means that we are talking about a very bright element. It is complemented by an ultra wide-angle lens (125.5º) with a resolution of 48 megapixels af/1.95 and a powerful 5x telephoto lens (21.8°) of 48 megapixels with a number of f/2.8. For the rest, as in the 8, we find a single-zone LDAF (laser detection automatic focus) sensor, a spectral and flicker sensor, and in the wide-angle shot, optical and electronic image stabilization. The front camera is based on an ultra-wide-angle (95º) with a resolution of 10.5 megapixels (1.22 μm) with a no. F/2.2.

The new Google Pixel 8 Pro can be pre-ordered now, it will be available from October 12 °with obsidian, porcelain and light blue variant and its price starts from 1,099 euros.
