SpaceX plans to launch 22 more Starlink Internet satellites into orbit tonight (Oct. 4) during the company’s 70th orbital mission of the year. The Starlink spacecraft is scheduled to lift off atop a Falcon 9 rocket from the Space Force Station in Cape Canaveral at 10:45 PM ET tonight (October 5, 02:45 GMT).
You can watch the event live on the SpaceX account on X (formerly Twitter). The broadcast is expected to begin approximately five minutes before launch. If all goes as planned, the Falcon 9 first stage will return to Earth for a vertical landing at sea aboard SpaceX’s unmanned spacecraft approximately 8.5 minutes after launch.
This will be the eighth takeoff and landing of the Falcon 9’s first stage, according to SpaceX’s mission statement. Four of the seven previous launches increased their Starlink lots. Meanwhile, 22 Starlink satellites are planned to be deployed into low Earth orbit (LEO) approximately 65 minutes after launch from the Falcon 9’s upper unit.
Today’s flight will be SpaceX’s 70th orbital mission in 2023. Most of these launches are dedicated to the creation of the Starlink megaconstellation, which currently consists of more than 4,800 active satellites.
The Falcon 9 rocket has flown 66 of SpaceX’s orbital missions this year, and the company’s powerful Falcon Heavy has handled the other three missions. But the final number is about to go up: Falcon Heavy plans to launch NASA’s Psyche asteroid mission on October 12.
This year, SpaceX also launched a test flight of its new deep space transportation system, Starship. This mission, which did not aim to send a payload into orbit, ended when Starship encountered problems four minutes after launch.
