Apple Maps begins rolling out New functions for Spain and Portugal. Apple’s Maps application, which has already received a significant list of improvements with the iOS 17 update, is now being updated with features focused on our country. New detailed experience, especially for some cities in our region, mode for cyclists and news about Apple Watch.
Detailed experience. Detailed experience is a function that is already available in some cities around the world but not in Spain. This function further expands the amount of information that the application shows us on its map, with a very large level of detail.
Road signs, surface types, trees, altitude, public transport routes, cycle paths, bus and taxi lanes, pedestrian crossings, etc. is stated. Different lanes of the road we travel on are also displayed in navigation mode, and interface improvements are coming in night mode.
Currently, this function is available in Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon, but there is no information from Apple about which cities will receive this innovation next.
Iconic places with personalized designs. We deserve to talk about the function of symbolic places in this detailed experience. Through this application, Apple designs 3D maps of places such as the Prado Museum, Puerta de Alcalá or Sagrada Familia.
As you can see in the image above, all you have to do to see the design of the monument in 3D is to search on Maps. This is integrated into the view of the city, so we can get an idea of the dimensions, road and other elements.
Important news for cyclists. Another important innovation concerns instructions for cyclists. This section has been completely improved, now a preview is shown showing information such as the altitude of the journey, indicators of whether the road is busy or not, notifications for getting off the bike and approaching some intersections on foot, voice commands, public bathrooms, bike workshops, etc. , etc.
All of these new indicators work with Apple Watch, so you can easily access them from your wrist. Since these new features reach Apple Maps on the server side, we will not need to update our application. Of course, we will have to use iOS 17.
