Two years ago, Microsoft started releasing Windows 11after officially announcing it a few months earlier on June 24 of that year. Since its introduction, there have been several reasons why the latest version of its desktop operating system has been questioned. Of course, the most popular were its technical requirements, and within them, above all, the requirement that computers have a TPM 2 module, which guarantees (at least in theory) the security of the system.

We therefore evaluate the adoption rate of Windows 11 for almost two years, with better and worse momentsOur numbers never met Microsoft’s expectations. The most visible proof of this is the daily use of Windows 10, as we periodically encounter messages, reminders and other types of elements that try to encourage us to jump. In some cases, it is necessary to decline the invitation up to three times in a row in order to continue using the computer.

We’ve known all along several problems related to Windows 11 updates, the latest since the day before yesterday, something that contrasts (though of course it’s understandable) with the stability offered by Windows 10, at this point a mature, very polished operating system, which, moreover, no longer receives reports that they are coming to Windows 11. The result? 11 adoption has been fluctuating, downwards according to the latest data from Steam, and has never approached Windows 10’s share in those two years.

And what is the situation in the professional environment? Well, even worse. According to a Lansweeper report, Windows 11’s market share in professional environments is only 8.35% compared to other versions of Windows. On the other hand, the ranking is overwhelmingly led by Windows 10, which is present in four out of five systems (80.56%). Among the remaining systems, 1.34% of Windows 7 and 0.25% of Windows XP attract attention.

It is true that the rate of adoption is generally slower in the professional environment than among private users, but it is still striking considering that we are talking about less than one in ten computers in this environment are running Windows 11all the more so considering that, most likely, a large part of the equipment that was acquired in these two years already integrates this operating system.

That seems more and more certain Windows 12 will be released before the end of the Windows 10 lifecycle, which might allow many users to skip this version. In reality, of course, this would mean jumping into a pool that may be even emptier, since again we will be talking about a brand new operating system, and thus not a particularly polished one. Of course, a change in the marketing model, like the one we told you about yesterday morning, can also affect this.
