Samsung introduces Exynos 2400 with AMD RDNA 3-based Xclipse 940 GPU

After many rumors and many leaks, Samsung has finally unveiled the Exynos 2400, the high-end SoC that will be used in the Galaxy S24, which represents an important upgrade compared to the Exynos 2200 SoCwhich is quite understandable, since we are talking about a chip that is two generations ahead (Samsung did not mention the Exynos 2300).

The Exynos 2400 SoC is promising 70% performance improvement at the CPU level compared to the Exynos 2200, a jump that is not bad even taking into account that there is actually a difference of two generations, as I mentioned in the previous section. Level AI performance we have a brutal improvement because according to Samsung this SoC is capable multiply the performance of the Exynos 2200 by 14.7 times.

Unfortunately, the South Korean company did not provide details on the CPU specifications, but according to previous rumors, the Exynos 2400 will be manufactured on a 4nm LPP+ node and will have 10 cores divided into four blocks. This is how they will be distributed:

  • High-performance Cortex-X4 core at 3.1 GHz.
  • Two Cortex-A720 cores at 2.9 GHz.
  • Three Cortex-A720 cores at 2.6 GHz.
  • Four low-power Cortex-A520 cores at 1.8 GHz.

The Exynos 2400 has a next-generation GPU

That’s what caused the biggest buzz, its Xclipse 940 GPU. We weren’t sure if Samsung would use the RDNA 2 architecture or if it would opt for RDNA 3. The latter was finally confirmedgood news because the RDNA 3 architecture is AMD’s most advanced and the one that offers a more interesting spec-level configuration.

Xclipse 940 GPU It is divided into three large parts, part pure or traditional GPU, part dedicated to ray tracing acceleration and part dedicated to AI, which are its first generation acceleration cores. This means that the Exynos 2400 GPU will be one of the most advanced solutions in its class and will be highly specialized.

Samsung hasn’t shared details about the configuration of this RDNA 3-based GPU, so we don’t know the number of compute units it will have and the number of shaders. However, it will most likely end up in positioning between 256 and 384 shaderssince we are talking about a graphics core for smartphones and the space at the silicon level and the TDP are very limited.

A recently leaked performance test gave us performance data for the Xclipse 940 in the Sacred Path Vulkan 1.3 benchmark, and as you can see in the images, said GPU is the one that achieves the best results because It outperforms both the Adreno 740 and the Mali G715 Immortalis MC11.

This is a good result, but there were significant fluctuations in the performance test that seem to confirm a significant case of thermal throttling, which would mean problems with excessive heat. Here’s hoping that Samsung manages to sort this out and that the Exynos 2400 SoC doesn’t eventually hit the market plagued by temperature issues.
