Microsoft has finally removed the standalone Cortana app from Windows 11 in the latest preview build for Insiders on the Canary Channel.

“After upgrading to this build, Cortana was removed. Today, we have discontinued support for Cortana,” Windows Insider team members Amanda Langowski and Brandon LeBlanc said.

Until early August, when support was discontinued in another Canary build, the personal assistant was deeply integrated into the Microsoft ecosystem and designed to work closely with other Microsoft products.

Redmond first announced the end of support for the standalone Windows Cortana app in a support document published in June.

“Cortana support in Mobile Teams, Microsoft Teams Display, and Microsoft Teams Rooms will end in fall 2023. Microsoft said voice support in Outlook Mobile and Microsoft 365 Mobile will also end in fall 2023.

“This change only affects Cortana on Windows, and your productivity assistant Cortana will continue to be available in Outlook Mobile, Teams Mobile, Microsoft Teams Display, and Microsoft Teams Room.”

After installing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25967 today, it’s time to permanently remove Cortana from Windows 11.

Microsoft Copilot takes the stage

Today’s announcement comes two years after Redmond said it would end support for the Cortana mobile app as of March 2021. At this year’s Build conference, the company announced that Cortana will be replaced by the AI-based Microsoft Copilot, a new Windows digital assistant.

This new AI-powered digital assistant started rolling out to all Windows users on September 26 with a wide range of new AI features as part of the latest Windows 11 22H2 update.

“Copilot will uniquely bring together the context and intelligence of the Internet, your work data, and what you are currently doing on your computer to provide better assistance with your privacy and security at the forefront,” said Microsoft CVP Yusuf Mehdi.

“Thanks to the feature update, Copilot on Windows will be enabled by default, but under your control via Microsoft Intune or Group Policy,” Microsoft’s Harjit Dhaliwal added in a separate corporate blog post.

Microsoft also suggests that Cortana users can replace it with other recently released products, including the new AI-powered Bing search engine and Voice Access for controlling PCs by voice in Windows 11.
