Spanish company PLD Space conducted a test launch of its Miura-1 reusable launch vehicle from a facility in southwestern Spain on Saturday; this was Europe’s first completely private rocket launch.
This was reported by Reuters, Ukrinform reported.
PLD Space CEO Raul Torres said all rocket systems performed “excellent” and added that the company will now focus on tripling its workforce.
Miura-1, named after a fighting bull species, is as tall as a three-storey building and has a load capacity of 100 kg.
Saturday’s launch was the first of two planned suborbital flights. However, according to analysts, the most critical test will be the development of orbital services for the larger Miura-5 vehicle, planned for 2025.
PLD Space plans to launch commercial and scientific satellites weighing less than 500 kilograms into Earth orbit using Miura 5 rockets starting from 2025.
As Ukrinform reported, an attempt to conduct a suborbital test flight at the end of May was postponed due to strong winds. The second attempt in June was canceled after the countdown reached “zero” and flames and smoke were seen near the rocket on the launch pad. The launch vehicle itself remained intact.
