Although it hasn’t been officially announced yet, Windows 12 has been a topic of conversation for a long time now. The reason is obvious, Windows 11 did not work as Microsoft would have liked, and the truth is that there are reasons for this, from the many problems with its updates to, especially at the time of its launch, which was only a few days ago. were two years old, it was actually a relatively “weak” update in terms of new features, but nevertheless represented a significant leap in terms of technical requirements.
It is true that over time Windows 11 adds new and interesting features, such as DirectStorage support, compatibility with Android apps, and more recently, the arrival of Windows Copilot. However, this development, according to many, does not compensate for the risk of abandoning the reliability of the already proven and highly polished Windows 10, in the face of the many problems that Windows 11 has faced practically since its launch.
Thus in accordance with the now classic “one good, one bad” theory that has accompanied Windows for many years, now expectations have been transferred to Windows 12, although at this point it is necessary to clarify that nothing but the above empirical model guarantees us that this future version of the operating system will be able to preserve the good (which will also exist, we cannot deny that) Windows 11, discard its negative aspects and of course add other interesting news. Today, of course, it is little more than a letter to the three wise men.
Be that as it may, those at Redmond have reasons to rush (even if it’s not a good sign), and today from PCGamer we know that Intel expects to launch Windows 12 in 2024. Of course, we have to take into account something very important here, which is that it is not the same as saying that I expect something like this to be done by a technology company like Intel, which has been hand in hand with Microsoft for decades, and which undoubtedly has a much higher a level of knowledge about the company’s future plans than the average person has, for obvious reasons.
Specifically, it was Intel CFO David Zinser was referring to windows updatewhich was not named but has a date: 2024:
«In fact, we think the 24th is going to be a pretty good year for customers, especially because of Windows Update. And we still think the installed base is pretty old and needs an upgrade, and we think next year could be ‘The Start of It’, given the Windows Catalyst. So we are optimistic about how things will develop from the 24th«.
It is known that the startup a new version of the operating system may have some catalytic effect on hardware saleswhich will not happen if we are talking about an update of the same version, that is, Zinser is not referring to something like Windows 11 24H2, but to the launch of a new major version, Windows 12.
My bet, admittedly premature and probably wrong, Microsoft will announce Windows 12 in mid-2024, approximately three years after the announcement and launch of Windows 11, and that its debut among early adopters will take place in the fall of that year, between late September and early October. So we can also expect an exponential increase in rumors and leaks about Windows 12 in the coming months. Rumors like the recent one that says that this new OS could adopt a subscription system, which my colleague Isidro made a very interesting point about which I completely agree .
