Two-time former Venezuelan presidential candidate Henrique Capriles said Sunday that he will not continue to run in the opposition primary because of a disqualification that would bar him

Two-time former Venezuelan presidential candidate Henrique Capriles said Sunday that he will not continue to run in the opposition primary because of a disqualification that would bar him from running for public office.

The resignation of Capriles, a 51-year-old lawyer, had been expected in some media for weeks, partly because his re-election campaign had failed in the polls and his figure seemed drained from his previous attempts to become president.

“I entered my candidacy in the primaries at the command of the constituencies that elected me to my party,” Capriles said in a public letter posted on the social network X, formerly Twitter.

“The reality is that I continue to face political disqualification, which makes me decide that I cannot continue in this election race,” he added. “I do not take this step lightly.”

Capriles lost to Chavez in 2012.

The former presidential candidate’s party, Primero Justicia, indicated on its X account that it supported his decision and noted that it would announce in a few hours the actions it would take in this regard.

The departure of the politician could seem like a symbolic blow to the internal process of the opposition, since, although he was not the favorite, he has always supported the electoral process and the unity of the opposition as the only way to defeat President Nicolas Maduro in the 2024 presidential elections, although the Head of State has not yet formalized his candidacy .

Capriles, who was banned for 15 years in 2017, did not say whether he would support other candidates such as Maria Corina Machado, a 57-year-old industrial engineer who leads in primary polls with more than 40%, while her closest rivals barely touching the 10% mark.

Machado, like Capriles, is barred from seeking elected office due to controversial decisions by the Office of the Comptroller General, which critics and opponents consider an arm of the government.

The opposition has not said how it will overcome the obstacle that the ban will prevent Machado from registering his candidacy with electoral authorities if he wins the Oct. 22 primary.
