Japan will provide subsidies worth $205 million for hydrogen fuel cell systems and other equipment. Japanese publication Nikkei writes that the government’s decision is aimed at supporting the development of electric aircraft components with reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
Nikkei reported that the commerce ministry’s financing plan will be presented at the working group meeting of the ministerial council. The government allocated $89 million to develop economical engine control systems and $116 million to create hydrogen fuel cell systems for aircraft.
The government wants research to start in 2024 and prototype tests to start in 2030. Japan is also reportedly seeking new partners, including in the aerospace, battery and automotive industries. Nikkei writes that Airbus is working on the development of new hydrogen-powered aircraft with the goal of entering commercial operation in 2035.
