Northrop Grumman will develop new guided munitions for the US Navy

The U.S. Navy has awarded a contract to Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) to develop the company’s new 57mm guided high-explosive munition. Designed for use with the Mk110 naval gun mount, the company is testing the qualification of the ammunition.

57mm guided high-explosive munitions have the unique ability to maneuver continuously in flight while moving towards a designated target. Designed to defend against fast-moving surface, unmanned aerial vehicles and swarming threats, the 57mm guided munition features a fuze with built-in homing to detect moving targets and self-selectable close-in or pinpoint burst modes for optimal hits and misses. aim.

“Our new 57mm guided munitions are truly innovative in their ability to identify, track and guide the target,” said Dave Fine, Northrop Grumman vice president of weapons systems. “The Navy will have a greater ability to defend against mobile threats and a new level of precision to defeat them.”

The newest member of Northrop Grumman’s advanced munitions line, the 57 mm round draws on the company’s expertise in guided munitions such as the Precision Guidance Kit. Using the GOS and stern maneuvering system, the projectile provides continuous trajectory guidance regardless of how often the target rotates. These new guided munitions will provide the Navy with greater range and a cost-effective solution to combat small, fast-moving threats without making changes to any weapon systems.
