Czech Republic to receive Leopard 2 tanks instead of T-72 transferred to Ukraine

Germany will continue to supply weapons to restore the defense reserves of Eastern European countries, which transferred equipment and weapons to Ukraine. This was announced by German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht, says Deutsche Welle.

Germany will deliver 15 Leopard 2A4 tanks to the Czech Republic to replenish the country’s armored vehicles, which supply Ukraine with weapons and military equipment to fight against the Russian invaders.

“The Czech Republic (to Ukraine – Ed.) provides heavy weapons, we are helping to close the gaps with Leopard tanks from Germany’s industrial reserves,” German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said on Wednesday (May 18th).

He described such “materials in a circle” as “a good example of how we can quickly and easily support Ukraine in its courageous war against Russian aggression.” The tanks will come from the arsenals of the Bundeswehr, along with ammunition and spare parts. It is reported that the Cabinet of Ministers of the Czech Republic has already approved the exchange procedure.

Jakub Fainor, spokesman for the Czech Ministry of Defense, said that the Czech Republic plans to start negotiations to purchase 50 more such tanks. Czech media recently reported that the Czech government agreed to deliver the Leopard 2 tanks to the country to replace the equipment transferred to Ukraine.

Preparations for signing a contract for the purchase of 20 Leopard 2A4 tanks, as well as 40 Leopard 2A7 tanks, were also covered in the press. The cost of such an agreement could be between 15 and 20 billion Czech crowns. It was noted that the Leopard 2A7 will be produced jointly by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and the Czech defense industry, which will take a significant part of the contract. Source
