Plumbing work in Giuliano, a suburb of Naples, revealed an intact chamber-tomb with frescoes on its ceiling and walls in pristine condition. There are frescoes and souvenirs depicting mythological characters on all four walls of the tomb. They are completely undamaged and still retain their bright colours. According to initial estimates, the history of the tomb dates back approximately 2000 years.

The grave was found in agricultural land during archaeological research in the area where the water network was renewed. Trial excavations revealed the existence of numerous ancient tombs, tombs and cremations spanning at least 400 years, from the Republican period to the Imperial period. Archaeologists discovered an opus incertum wall (a style of masonry using rough stones of various shapes and sizes) at the edge of the necropolis. This turned out to be the front wall of the tomb, and like the interior it was in excellent condition, still covered with a heavy tufa sheet over the square entrance. After all the work and funeral ceremonies were completed, a notch was made at the top of the grave and tiles were laid to create an opening.

Archaeologists gained access to the burial chamber by removing the tiles covering the ceiling. They found the contents completely untouched and pristine. The walls are painted with garlands and mythological scenes. The impressive painting that gives the tomb its name depicts Hercules’ 12th and most dangerous deed: when he descended into Hades, led by Mercury, to capture the three-headed dog monster Cerberus.

The front wall depicts Ichthyocentaurs, a pair of sea gods with the upper torso of a human, the forelegs of a horse, and a long snake-like fish tail, holding a lath (round shield) between them. They are accompanied by two winged erots (Roman dolls resembling Cupid).

The tomb also contained three painted wedges (altars), placed on burial beds next to the rich grave goods, containing vessels for draining liquids and, more importantly, the deceased themselves. Excavations in the burial chamber continue and archaeologists plan to explore the larger necropolis as well. Source
