To ensure your Pixel 8 smartphone lasts throughout its support period, Google offers replacement parts for repairs for up to seven years.

Google announced its new Pixel smartphones last week, officially available for the first time in Belgium. One of the eye-catchers of the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro is the extensive support policy. Google promises its latest devices seven years of feature and security updates. That sounds great, but if your device breaks after three years, it’s of little use.

To deliver on this promise, Google Android Authority promises to provide replacement parts and updates for the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro for the same period. So also seven years. For example, Google would like to help owners of a Pixel 8 (Pro) to bridge the entire support period with their device.

As a user, you can carry out repairs on the battery, screen and other parts that may break after years of daily use by yourself or through an authorized repairer. The parts can be easily removed and replaced from the device yourself. Google simply doesn’t explain how these parts get to you. This can be done via recognized partners or simply directly via the webshop.

Right to repair

Google’s generous gesture is largely due to political pressure. The European Commission put the right to repair on paper this year and will also actively ensure that electronics manufacturers comply with the rules. The USA wants to follow Europe’s example. The theory does not always agree with practice. Apple claims its new iPhones are easy to repair, but those who have tried it have come to a different conclusion.

Google promises to initially only offer replacement parts for the Pixel 8 smartphones. If you also buy a Pixel Watch 2 or Buds Pro, you have fewer options if the device breaks.
