Counter Strike 2 It is one of the most wanted games of 2023, and although it is surprising, one aspect that attracts attention is what operating systems it will support. Windows is taken for granted for obvious reasons, but macOS was still up in the air. The presence of the game for Linux is confirmed and materialized, which is normal considering the existence of the Steam Deck, but Valve has spoken and announced that there will be no version or compilation for the Mac OS, at least for now.
Valve pro is cited as the main reason leaving macOS without Counter-Strike 2 means that less than 1% of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (GS: GO) players use the operating system., although he included in that percentage Windows users who use a 32-bit system compilation and DirectX 9. We assume that the percentage of Linux users will be higher, although Valve has reasons to be selfish here. On the other hand, we remember that macOS has a compilation for GS:GO, although it may not work natively on Apple Silicon.
Valve explains that due to technological advances, it has decided to end support for macOS and older technologies, including DirectX 9 and 32-bit operating systems. As a result of this decision, Counter-Strike 2 will only support 64-bit Windows and Linux. Users who cannot upgrade to the new version of the game have the option to request a refund of their Prime Status Upgrade.
Operating system quotas as of September 2023 Steam survey.
Users eligible for a refund are macOS users who purchased their Prime Status Upgrade for CS:GO between the limited trial announcement (March 22, 2023) and Counter-Strike 2 launch (September 27, 2023) and Windows, who use a 32-bit system build or who run DirectX 9 as a later version of the API under the same conditions. Refunds will be offered until December 1, 2023, and support for GS:GO will end on January 1, 2024.
Valve says so GS:GO will also be available after January 1, 2024, but that certain features that depend on Game Coordinator, such as inventory access, may degrade or fail. In other words, the game can still be obtained, but the company does not guarantee that it will function properly.
In short, and sticking to the company’s version, Valve sees no incentive to make Counter-Strike 2 support macOS. This is a little surprising if we see that the difference between the number of users of Linux and macOS is quite small, but the Apple platform has the disadvantage that most use it from laptops, while there is a greater variety of equipment in Linux.
We remember that Valve recently launched a new Steam Next Fest with which it is possible to try games for free.
