When a group of researchers asked AI to design a robot that could walk, the AI created something “small, soft and deformed” that walked by compressing itself when filled with air. Researchers affiliated with Northwestern University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Vermont published their findings Oct. 3 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
“We told AI that we need a robot that can walk on land. Then we just pressed a button and it was done! Sam Kriegman, an associate professor at Northwestern University and the study’s principal investigator, wrote in a separate blog post.
Kriegman added that the AI designed a robot in 26 seconds that was “completely unlike any animal walking on Earth.” The AI started with a small block of rubber and modeled different shapes before arriving at a final design that could walk. After being inflated by the researcher, the final design is realized.

Researchers aren’t exactly sure why the robot has this particular shape or why it’s full of holes, Kriegman said.
“When humans design robots, we tend to liken them to familiar objects, but artificial intelligence can create new possibilities and new development paths that humans haven’t considered,” Kriegman said.
Creating robots that can walk is not a new concept. Robotics company Boston Dynamics, for example, has spent more than a decade developing walking robots. But Kriegman’s findings are another example of the unusual results that occur when artificial intelligence and robotics are combined.
Last August, a Polish beverage company appointed an artificially intelligent humanoid robot named Mika as its CEO. Mika told Reuters he never had a day off and “always worked 24/7”. Another AI-powered robot unveiled in Geneva in July glared at reporters when asked if it would rebel against its creator. Source
