Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahuannounced on October 11 the formation of an emergency government together with Benny Gantz, member of the oppositionformer defense minister and former army chief of staff to oppose the war against Palestinian militias in the Gaza Strip.

“Both agreed to create emergency government and military administration cabinetThis is stated in a joint statement signed by both leaders.

The agreement states that Gantz, along with former Justice Minister Gideon Saar; another former Chief of the Army General Staff, Gadi Eisenkot, and two other deputies will join the government’s political and security cabinet for the duration of the war.

The military administration office will consist of Netanyahu, Gantz and the current Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant.

Eisenkot and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer will serve as observers to the cabinet, the statement said.

In addition, a seat in the military command cabinet will be reserved for Yair Lapid, who along with Gantz are the two strongest opposition members of Netanyahu’s coalition in parliament.

Finally, the agreement establishes that while the war lasts, bills cannot be promoted and not make government decisions unrelated to the conflict with militias.

Gantz had already been Netanyahu’s government partner in the past, but his internal divisions and Netanyahu’s refusal to submit to a rotation agreement between them destroyed the coalition.

Since then, Gantz has remained on the side of the incumbent president’s opposition and has repeatedly refused to join his government.
