Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formed an emergency government to lead the war against Hamas, with his defense minister vowing to wipe the Palestinian militant group “off the face of the earth” for its deadly weekend attack.
Islamist militants Hamas invaded Israel from the Gaza Strip on Saturday in a surprise attack that killed at least 1,200 people, the deadliest attack by Palestinian militants in Israeli history.
Israel responded with a massive bombing of the Gaza Strip that killed 1,055 people and stationed thousands of troops around the enclave amid growing expectations that it would launch a ground invasion to destroy Hamas..
In a joint statement, Netanyahu and former defense chief and centrist opposition party leader Benny Gantz said they had agreed to form an emergency government consisting of the two leaders and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
Gallant, the defense minister, said: “We will wipe out this organization called Hamas, ISIS-Gaza. Will cease to exist.”
Gantz, Israel’s former defense chief and general, said it was a moment of war and national unity.
During the fighting with Hamas in Gaza, the emergency government will not enact any policies or laws unrelated to the conflict, Netanyahu and Gantz said in a joint statement.
At this stage, opposition leader Yair Lapid was not expected to join the emergency government.
