KU Leuven, TU Eindhoven and RWTH Aachen combine competencies in the field of AI

Three educational partners will work together and pool their expertise in the field of artificial intelligence Intelligence in research and education. The three partners KU Leuven, TU Eindhoven and RWTH Aachen have signed a memorandum of understanding. They all enjoy a good reputation in their field and want to give a strong boost to AI research and training at the European level and for the tri-border region of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

KU Leuven, TU Eindhoven and RWTH Aachen have a lot of experience in the field of AI research and training. The new collaboration will be reflected in joint project proposals and research projects, joint postdoctoral and doctoral programs, regular exchanges for researchers and students, the exchange of experiences and best practices, the organization of symposia, workshops, hackathons, etc.

“The possibilities of artificial intelligence are impressive, but also raise many questions,” says Rector Luc Sels.

“Not just technologically, but also legally, ethically and philosophically and in many other areas. With this signing, we join forces with two very strong and complementary players in the field of artificial intelligence to jointly provide a powerful response to these challenges, both in the tri-border region and at European level.”

Institute for AI

Artificial intelligence has been at the top of the agenda at KU Leuven for more than 30 years. Within the university, researchers from various disciplines have been working on the topic for years. For example, Leuven.AI, the Institute for Artificial Intelligence at KU Leuven, was founded in 2020. This network brings together 108 professors and researchers from various disciplines related to AI research and training.

“In addition to our research expertise, we are also a pioneer in education in Belgium with our 200 master’s students in AI,” says Luc De Raedt, director of Leuven.AI. The course has just begun its 35th year.

“AI forces us to think outside the box and requires a multidisciplinary approach. After founding Leuven.AI, this collaboration is a logical next step. With a shared vision, we want to contribute to enriching society with the opportunities that AI offers us, but also with an eye for the pitfalls and risks that it brings with it.”
