The company announced an expanded set of features for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Soon, branded gadgets will receive a firmware update that can make life easier for users with disabilities.
The Live Captions feature converts the audio track into on-screen text on the fly. It will help users with hearing impairments to watch videos without embedded subtitles and communicate via FaceTime video calls. Owners of branded smartphones and tablets will be able to adjust the font size and enter text responses voiced by a screen reader.
The innovation will be available later this year in English on iPhone 11 and newer models, as well as on iPad with an A12 Bionic processor or later, and Mac computers with Apple Silicon.
Another special feature called Door Detection is aimed at visually impaired people. It will appear on Apple smartphones and tablets with a LiDAR scanner and will locate a door in a room, tell you how far it is, and tell you how to open it and if there are special signs or symbols next to it.
Disabled users will also be able to control their Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch Series 7 from iPhone via AirPlay using voice control and other accessibility features such as head tracking. The new Apple Watch Quick Actions will also allow smartwatch wearers to use gestures (like making a double fist) to answer or end a phone call, reject messages, take a screenshot, and more.
Finally, Apple will expand support for VoiceOver screen readers with 20 new languages, including Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, and Vietnamese. In addition, users will be able to select optimized voices for different languages and will receive a text inspection tool to find formatting problems. New accessibility features will be released later this year with a software update.
