Will it soon no longer be necessary to enter appointments in a calendar or diary via WhatsApp? Some reports certainly suggest this.

According to niche website WABetaInfo, Meta is working on a feature for WhatsApp to schedule and register events in group conversations.

The beta version 2.23.21.12 of WhatsApp for Android is said to contain a new event function. This allows participants (or just the administrators of a group, which is not clear) to create and manage an event. WABetaInfo shared via X a screenshot with the possibilities of the new feature.

You can create an event in the app, including name, description and date. You can then share it in the group, for example as a photo or as a file. You also have the option to add a location or a scheduled video call if it is a virtual event (or perhaps for those who cannot attend in real life).

Ceci is no longer a messaging app

After the Channels feature, WhatsApp seems to be moving a little more towards Facebook with this new feature. However, it is also reminiscent of Outlook’s calendar function.

With Meta as gatekeeper, it also remains to be seen whether WhatsApp has also taken the Digital Markets Act into consideration for this future function. Will we soon be able to create a doodle directly in the green app?
