Google protects customers who work with its AI

Customers who use Google products with generative AI and are concerned about copyright can be a little more relaxed. The tech giant will take on more responsibility and support its customers with legal issues in this area.

The advancement of AI has been progressing for some time and there are now millions of people creating creations using the technology every day. However, generative AI trains with content found online. Too often this is still the case with copyrighted content that is not actually allowed to be used freely. This leads to a lawsuit more than once. Google will now provide its customers with legal advice in such cases.

Twofold

The concept is simple. If customers get into legal copyright issues through using an AI product, Google will take responsibility. Specifically, the company is based on two pillars:

  • Training Data – all Google customers are generally protected by default by Google third-party intellectual property compensation and any company that is a customer is protected from third-party complaints
  • Generated output – the compensation Google provides to third parties also covers what its customers generate through Google’s AI products

Secondly, there is an important caveat. This protection does not apply to customers who knowingly create content that may infringe the rights of others. Companies that are customers and want to benefit from this protection are expected to use AI responsibly.

Extensive

Google now has a number of AI products. The current legal protection applies to the following systems:

  • Duet AI in the workspace
  • Duet AI on Google Cloud
  • Vertex AI search
  • Vertex AI talk
  • Vertex AI Text Embedding API / Multimodal Embeddings
  • Visual Captions/Visual Questions and Answers by Vertex AI
  • Codey APIs

With this decision, Google says it offers balanced and practical protection for all relevant cases of damage. This automatically appears in the Terms of Service, customers do not need to add any additional addition to their existing agreement.
