The European Union warned social network TikTok about “misinformation” spreading on the platform following the Hamas group’s attack on Israel. The social network has seen a rise in war-related disinformation, including mislabeled videos.

According to Ukrinform, this situation was reported by the BBC.

The EU sent a letter to the company’s CEO, Shaw Zi Chu, asking him to “urgently step up” efforts and explain “within the next 24 hours” how TikTok complies with European law.

The EU should remember the social network’s popularity among young people, he said.

“TikTok has a special obligation to protect children and young people from violent content and terrorist propaganda, as well as death threats and potentially life-threatening content. The DSA (Digital Services Act) sets out very clear obligations that TikTok must meet.” “Comply with this,” said Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the EU’s Internal Market.

In August 2023, the EU introduced new laws regulating the types of content allowed on the internet. The Digital Services Act requires so-called “very large online platforms” to proactively remove “illegal content” and demonstrate that they have taken steps to do so upon request.

The DSA agreement allows the European Union to carry out inspections and launch a formal investigation if not satisfied.

If the Commission decides that the platform does not meet the requirements or does not solve the identified problems and risks harming users, more radical measures can be taken: a large fine and, in the most extreme case, an appeal to judges with a request for a temporary ban of the platform on the territory of the EU.

As Ukrinform reported, European Commissioner Breton called on Elon Musk to combat disinformation spread on the X platform following the attack on Israel by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.
