Apple’s upcoming iOS 17.1 update will be released on October 24, according to French regulatory group ANFR. The release date was announced in an update on ANFR’s website outlining Apple’s plan to address the issue of radiation levels in the iPhone 12.
The French translation of the update states, “Apple has committed to releasing the update in France.” “This fix will be available to all users no later than October 24.”
Earlier this week, Apple confirmed that iOS 17.1 would include settings to reduce the iPhone 12’s radiation levels. In September, France ordered Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 and “correct” the devices to comply with European electromagnetic radiation standards. The order came after the ANFR found that the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of the iPhone 12 was 5.74 watts per kilogram, exceeding the limit set by the European Union.
According to Apple, ANFR erred in its radiation tests by using a testing protocol that did not take into account the in-body detection mechanism in the “iPhone.” iPhones have a built-in feature that allows them to increase their transmission power when outside the body to optimize cellular performance.
Apple says in-body detection has been “thoroughly tested and validated internationally as an effective mechanism for SAR compliance,” but despite this, the company has agreed to disable the feature on iPhones in France.
According to Apple, the ‌iPhone‌ 12 is safe to use and always has been. After iOS 17.1, ‌iPhone‌ 12 models in France will no longer increase transmission power when an off-body situation is detected, so coverage in areas with low cellular signal may result in decreased cellular performance in some use cases.
The iOS 17.1 update brings a number of other changes to the iOS 17 operating system, including the Apple Music favorites system, support for AirDrop over the Internet, new options for viewing bank balances and card balances in the Wallet app, changes to the iPhone 15 Pro Action button, and more. You can find the full list in our iOS 17.1 feature guide.
