VOD newsbrings you the week’s best releases on Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix… And can’t you already smell the smell of Halloween? There’s still a few weeks to go, yes, but you know how it is in the modern world, not to mention that yesterday was Friday the 13th and there’s not a stitch without thread. So don’t take it The Fall of the House of Usher as nothing more than a banner that precedes a parade, when in reality it is something more… or it should be.
Netflix
I’m giving up duds to start the weekly review and VOD news which Netflix tops because it premiered there The Fall of the House of Usher, which not only, although unlike a regular tonic, is not much. If anything, check it out too Good night worlda new original anime series from the big N on VOD that doesn’t look bad at least on paper.
The Fall of the House of Usher
The Fall of the House of Usher is, as everyone will understand, the release of the week: a new adaptation of a classic from the master of horror Edgar Allan Poe, and there are not as many as one might think or want, produced to fanfare by Mike Flanagan, one of the current gurus of the genre, responsible for titles such as Doctor Sleep and successful series such as The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor or Midnight Mass are now home on Netflix.
Brutal combination? Well, unfortunately, no. But since the rule here is, with a few exceptions, to highlight the most notable, here is The Fall of the House of Ushera new horror miniseries from Flanagan for Netflix based on Poe’s story, which, it’s clear, has a first-class production level, a consistent cast and a rhythm that doesn’t fail, but it almost doesn’t respect the spirit of the original story and therefore lacks the shabby majesty of it.
The Fall of the House of Usher What worries us, unfortunately, is the decadent inertia without apparent shame typical of them familyand, but from most of the content being produced today, with Netflix as a sad reference. No, it’s not a bad series, quite the opposite; but this adaptation, this update of the classic, is somewhat outrageous to those who enjoyed the original material, which has yet to be given the respect it deserves. The closest thing, the sixtieth film and neither.
The Fall of the House of Usher is Flanagan’s worst adaptation for Netflix so far, so maybe Frank Langella can be glad he was left out… and for the record, Bruce Greenwood is pretty much the best thing that’s been on screen in eight episodes of How long does trauma last? But let’s not run into intrastories where the story itself fails. That being said, this is my opinion. And look, there is a point to naming each chapter after a Poe story, but…

From the director Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, monsters vs. Aliens or the same nightmares coming to Disney+ nightmares, a series adaptation not of the film but of the work of RL Stine. Doesn’t that sound familiar? Think about the mix of fantasy, comedy and horror, not for all audiences, but almost, how well it works when done well. And you might be wondering, is it… well done? As for taste, colors, but most critics seem to agree, which is still a good sign.
