Meta said it began removing praise or messages supporting Hamas from its platforms after the EU condemned the social network for not doing enough to combat disinformation.

This was reported by Reuters, Ukrinform reported.

Meta is also temporarily expanding its anti-violence and anti-incitement policy and will remove content that explicitly describes hostages taken by Hamas, even if this is done to condemn their plight or raise awareness.

Content featuring blurry images of kidnap victims is still allowed, but the company has said it will prioritize the safety and privacy of hostages unless it is sure the images posted will not harm them.

Meta also said it was aware of Hamas’ threat to release hostage videos and would quickly remove such content and prevent copies from being redistributed.

The company is working to ensure that Facebook, Instagram and Threads do not recommend content that could potentially violate these rules.

Although Hamas is banned on these platforms, Meta allows social and political discourse such as news, human rights issues or other discussions.

Three days after the attack, Meta said more than 795,000 messages in Hebrew or Arabic had been removed or flagged as sensitive content.

Under the Digital Services Act (DSA), the European Commission requires social media platforms to remove illegal and harmful content, which can lead to heavy fines.

According to Ukrinform’s report, TikTok social network received a warning from the EU due to disinformation spread on the platform following the Hamas group’s attack on Israel. The social network has seen a rise in war-related disinformation, including mislabeled videos.
