As the fourth player in the telecommunications sector, Digi Belgium immediately has big plans. The new operator is already planning to expand its own fiber optic network.
The fourth name in the Belgian telecommunications market Digi Belgium wants to consider its own network of fiber optic cables next year in addition to mobile services. De Tijd reports this.
We reported in August that part-Romanian telecommunications provider Digi Belgium was already launching its services without its own physical network. To this end, the newcomer signed a contract with an established name. Digi Belgium will serve its customers for the time being Mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) via the Proximus network.
However, the fourth operator on the Belgian market is ambitious. Not only does Digi Belgium want to build a network, the company is also considering its own fiber optic cables. This means that the provider immediately follows the plans of the competition. These are not yet in a concrete phase, Digi Belgium will first carry out a construction test to learn from it.
The Romanian company sees opportunities particularly in urban areas, but renting a network is still an option. Meanwhile, the telecommunications regulator BIPT (Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications) has also opened the door to allow different providers to collaborate on a fiber optic network. Digi Belgium still has options.
The company’s own fiber optic network could also be used for television. Digi Belgium would consult with various possible partners regarding the content, but the technical side remains somewhat secret. The company wants to work with what it says is a more modern process than the well-known decoder.
Digi Belgium is a partnership between the companies Citymesh and Digi Communications. The joint venture was first introduced last year when it acquired one of the 5G frequencies for Belgium in an auction.
