Peruvian health authorities have created epidemiological fence after discovery case of human rabies in a 54-year-old woman it was a few weeks before bitten by an unidentified dog in the southern region of Arequipa, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported.

The infected person lived in the Chiguata area and is being treated at the Honorio Delgado Espinoza Regional Hospital in Arequipa, more than 1,000 kilometers south of Lima.

Minsa said she intervened in the area. through the National Institutes of Health (INS) and the National Center for Epidemiology, Disease Prevention and Control (CDC).

In addition, the medical staff of the Regional Health Directorate (Geresa) of Arequipa created epidemiological fencing in the sector where the case was registered “To break the chain of transmission,” and people who came into contact with the woman have also received medical attention and are being vaccinated against rabies.

Health Secretary Cesar Vázquez has ordered a special team from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Minsa’s Office for the Prevention and Control of Metaxenic Diseases and Zoonoses to travel to Arequipa in the next few hours to support the investigation into the case.

The CDC reported that The last case of urban rabies in the country was recorded in 2015. in a person infected in the southern region of Puno, bordering Bolivia.

Minsa added that these human rabies cases occurred following the re-emergence of canine rabies in the country in 2014, and for this reason, “field epidemiological investigation, clinical monitoring of cases and exposed individuals will continue.”
