American 155 mm artillery systems will be able to destroy targets within a radius of 150 km. For this, Boeing is developing a long-range Ramjet 155 projectile.

The new projectile of the American company is equipped with a direct flow jet engine. Boeing and the Norwegian company Nammo are interested in creating ammunition as part of the Extended Range Artillery Ammunition Package (ERAMS) program.

The project started in 2018. There is no information yet on when the Ramjet 155 will be ready for mass production. We also don’t know what the bullet will be at the end of its maximum range. It was initially reported that the ammunition could destroy targets within a 70 km radius. Now developers are trying to achieve a range of 150 km. It is known that the parameter will depend on the type of artillery installation.

So far, Boeing and Nammo have only announced direct use of the jet engine but have not disclosed design information. The same technology used in the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), namely GPS, will be used for guidance.

This means that the Ramjet 155 can only hit stationary targets. It is possible that in the future developers will be able to integrate some kind of homing head that will enable the destruction of moving objects. But despite its ability to only hit stationary targets, the Ramjet 155 will be a big step forward compared to current artillery shells.
