Under its KB identifier KB5031356, we find the monthly security update for Microsoft operating systems, informally known as Patch Tuesday which, as its name suggests, started shipping last week for Windows 10 builds 19044.3570 and 19045.3570 (21H2 and 22H2). Its scope is global, that is, it covers Home and Pro versions, both for home users and managed computers.

The problem is, as reported by some users and confirmed by Microsoft itself, when trying to install the KB5031356 update on Windows 10, the process starts normally, but at some point it stops running and shows an error message. The most common, although not the only one reported is “Error 8007000D (ERROR_INVALID_DATA)”as we can read in the update released by Microsoft, which also provides information on how to proceed if we encounter this problem.

To do this, you need to open a command prompt as an administrator and execute the following command in it “Dism /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth” without quotes. Once the process is complete, you will be able to reinstall the update normally. Of course, this method cannot be used on managed systems.

As mentioned above, this problem does not affect all Windows 10 installations and at this time the exact reason why this is happening is unknown. In my case with Windows 10 22H2, I installed the update a few days ago and there were no problems during the process.
