Agreements are signed to hold presidential elections in Venezuela

Government Venezuela On Tuesday, the opposition signed two partial agreements establishing electoral guarantees for the 2024 presidential elections. These measures could pave the way for an easing of US sanctions on the country.

Elections to elect a new president will be held in the second half of 2024, according to an electoral agreement that will include the presence of international observers to monitor the vote.

Each party can choose a candidate according to its internal rules, the agreement says, days before the opposition holds its primaries on Oct. 22.

The agreements are expected to pave the way for the United States to provide some flexibility on oil-related sanctions.

Washington has long said it would lift some sanctions against the government of Nicolas Maduro in exchange for democratic concessions from the president. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tuesday’s meeting, held on the Caribbean island of Barbados, was the first between the sides in 11 months.

Negotiations aimed at ensuring the country’s exit from the protracted political and economic crisis, Venezuelawill continue at a date yet to be determined, according to the agreement.

Head of the government delegation VenezuelaJorge Rodriguez said on Tuesday that if a candidate is disqualified, he will not be able to be a candidate for the presidency.

Maduro, who has served as president since 2013, is expected to run for re-election but has not yet formalized his candidacy. His government banned prominent opposition figures such as favorite Maria Corina Machado from running.

Following the agreement, US President Joe Biden’s government is expected to announce some limited but significant sanctions relief, US sources said.

However, the sources added that any easing of sanctions would be reversible if Maduro changes direction. (Reuters).
