Continued forced displacement and threats of further attacks on those under siege Gaza Strip, during an armed conflict between Israel and Hamas They pose a significant risk and public health emergency, an expert from UN.
“All parties to the conflict and their international partners must ensure rapid and unimpeded access to essential humanitarian goods, including food, water and medicine, fuel and electricity,” said Tlaleng Mofokeng, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health.
This comes after escalating violence in the region killed at least 12 health workers and damaged 24 health centers in the Gaza Strip.
“Aid workers, doctors, civil society, human rights organizations and journalists continue to work in the region, even though they themselves are being bombed,” the expert said.
World Health Organization (WHO) documented more than 111 attacks on health facilities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including 48 attacks in the Gaza Strip that killed at least 12 health workers.
Tlaleng Mofokeng said Gaza’s medical infrastructure was “irreparably damaged” and access to medicine was limited.
Likewise, the rapporteur stated that Israel is preventing the entry of essential supplies into Gaza, including food, water, fuel, medicine, disposable medical supplies and equipment. Therefore, he noted that the region’s health sector has reached a “tipping point.”
Hamas attacks on October 7 killed at least 1,400 people inside Israel, and Israel bombed the Gaza Strip for 10 days, killing at least 3,000 Palestinians.
In addition, the Islamist group has at least 200 hostages, while other Palestinian militias will have about 50 prisoners.
Given this, Israel ordered the civilian population to leave the conflict zones and move south. However, the organizations noted that this call is contrary to international humanitarian law and puts people at risk.
