The OnePlus Open takes a different approach to foldable smartphones than Samsung and packs not only top specifications but also a top camera into a foldable design.

OnePlus and Oppo are teaming up to launch a foldable phone. Oppo focuses on the Chinese market while OnePlus takes care of the rest of the world. Why is that important? You could say that it is the first foldable phone that OnePlus makes, but in a hands-on session, you immediately notice that the device exudes more experience.

Oppo has already launched two versions of the Find N in China, which is the third iteration. The result is a sophisticated model that is convincing across the board and makes (almost) no compromises.

A different approach

The main difference to the Samsung Galaxy Fold 5 is the proportions. Instead of a long, narrow device with a less usable screen on the front, OnePlus uses a wider 6.31-inch OLED screen. Inside there is a spacious 7.82-inch OLED screen. Both support a dynamic refresh rate of up to 120Hz via LTPO 3.0.

What’s special is that the fold is barely visible, even though the phone closes completely without opening. That would be the result of one

The heart is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, like every top model this year, paired with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.

The 4,805 mAh battery supports fast charging at up to 67 watts (0-100% in 42 minutes) via the included charger. Unfortunately, the charging technology is still not Power Delivery compatible. To quickly charge this phone, you have to take the dedicated OnePlus charger with you everywhere, while the charger itself is hardly usable for other devices.

Another flaw: the OnePlus Open does not support wireless charging. According to OnePlus, this is due to too little space in the case. We think that’s a lame excuse in this price range.

Strong camera trio

Where other foldable phones compromise on camera quality, OnePlus puts its very best cameras in the foldable phone. In addition to a 48 MP (f/1.7) main camera, there is a 48 MP (f/2.2) wide-angle lens and a 64 MP 3x optical zoom (f/2.6). The three cameras were tuned by Hasselblad.

There is a 32MP selfie camera on the front and a 20MP selfie camera on the large screen inside. The latter is in one Perforator integrated into the screen.

Price and availability

The OnePlus Open isn’t cheap, but the price is “competitive” compared to the competition. For 1,799 euros including VAT you get a device with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. The phone is available in two colors: green and black. The device is now for sale.
