Japan’s foreign ministry on Friday announced a request from Google to reinstate the use of Japanese names on Google Maps for a group of islands controlled by Tokyo
This was reported by Kyodo, as reported by Ukrinform.
Japan’s foreign ministry told Google that the Senkaku Islands are Japan’s inalienable territory and that the country’s claims have clear historical foundations and are based on international law.
Also on Thursday, Japan’s foreign ministry noted that Chinese and Taiwanese names, along with the Japanese name, are used on Google Maps for islands in the East China Sea. The article states that as a result, the names China and Taiwan were removed.
It is stated that Japan applied to Google with a similar request to remove the Chinese name of the islands in 2010.
As Ukrinform reported, seven thousand new islands were discovered following digital mapping in Japan at the beginning of March.
