Republican attempt hardline conservative Jim Jordan from become Speaker of the House of Representatives from the United States term when his fellow party members withdrawn He support after the third unsuccessful vote in the House of Representatives.
Opposition to Jordan’s candidacy within his party grew throughout the week.
Some 25 Republican congressmen voted against him. in the third round of voting in the House of Representatives on Friday, more than the 22 who opposed it in the runoff on Wednesday.
Jordan received 194 votes, far short of the 214 votes he needed to win the presidency. Republicans then voted to rescind his appointment in closed session.
“Jim is a good person. But you know, when there are no votes, there are no votes,” said Republican Rep. Greg Murphy.
Trump ally Jim Jordan
Close ally of Donald Trump, Jordan Was an “important player” in the former president’s efforts to overturn Biden’s 2020 election victory, according to a congressional investigation.
“I think there were all kinds of problems with the 2020 election, and I was clear about that,” he said at a news conference before the vote.
The small Republican majority was unable to unite behind Jordan or any other candidate to replace House speaker. Kevin McCarthy fired party members on October 3.
They also failed to agree on an alternative plan that would have allowed the House to pass the legislation.
Republicans control the House of Representatives by a narrow majority of 221–212, although some members were absent from Friday’s vote.
Jordan’s vote total was less than McCarthy’s in a grueling 15 ballots in January.
Death threats
Jordan’s open approach appears to have worked against him, as some Republicans were outraged abusive phone calls and death threats.
Jordan’s allies say it shouldn’t matter. “All of us in Congress are receiving death threats.. I don’t know if this is news to anyone here,” Scott Perry said.
Jordan as a dangerous extremist
Meanwhile, Democrats describe Jordan as a dangerous extremist and they unanimously voted against it.
“Your candidate’s vision is a direct attack on the freedom and rights of the American people, and he has the experience to back it up,” Democrat Katherine Clarke said on the House floor.
It’s unclear whether Republicans will be able to unite around other potential candidates, and several names were already being rumored Friday.
Republicans are also divided over an alternative that could allow the House to pass the $106 billion national security package introduced by Joe Biden on Friday that would bolster U.S. border security and send billions to Israel and Ukraine.
And other pressing issues, such as spending legislation that would allow the federal government to continue operating beyond the Nov. 17 deadline.
The plan would give more power to Republican Patrick McHenry, who serves as House speaker pro tem.
Democrats in the House and White House said they were open to the idea, but Republicans rejected it Thursday.
Market volatility
Investors say the unrest on Capitol Hill is also contributing to market volatility.
Jordan earned a reputation as the leader of this uncompromising right wing. His supporters say that would make him an effective campaigner for conservative policies.
He helped orchestrate government shutdowns in 2013 and 2018 and helped send Republican President John Boehner into retirement in 2015. (Reuters)
