HRW demands that Israel restore electricity, water and aid to Gaza; “this is a war crime”

Human Rights Watch (HRW) demanded from the Israeli government To “Immediately restore electricity, water and fuel and allow unhindered humanitarian assistance to Gaza.”

He repeated to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that “denial of basic services population is a collective punishment, war crime“.

“While aid agencies struggle to get several truckloads of humanitarian aid into southern Gaza via Egypt, Israeli authorities are keeping their Gaza crossings closed and refusing to switch to water and electricity supplies,” he condemned HRW executive director Tirana Hassan.

Israel’s “war crime”: cutting essential services

“There is no justification for denying water, food and medicine to the civilian population of Gaza. It’s cruel and is contrary to international law.”

He noted that restoring water and electricity supplies in Gaza would “meet at least part of the enormous humanitarian needs” in the region.

He recalled that international humanitarian law requires Israel, as the occupying power, to guarantee attention to the basic needs of the civilian population.

“Israel should also facilitate, rather than block, the delivery of humanitarian aid. Cutting off water and electricity to the population is tantamount to illegal collective punishment.

“Governments must respect the right to water”

“Under international human rights law, governments must respect the right to water, which includes refraining from restricting access to or destroying water services and infrastructure as a punitive measure during armed conflict.”

“Israeli authorities must act immediately. Lives are at stake,” Hasan said.

The request comes after the same organization, in another statement this Wednesday, called for Israel to lift blockade of Gaza Strip ‘immediately’ to meet the enormous humanitarian needs of the civilian population, even then claiming that “collective punishment” is a war crime. (Europe Press)
