Gaza hospitals: no anesthesia, corridors crowded with wounded

Patients operated on without anesthesia The corridors show daily life in the hospitals that remain open in the Palestinian Gaza Strip, under the control of the Islamist group Hamas and subject to Israeli bombing, which entered its fifteenth day this Saturday.

“They operate on those who may have a life expectancy, others are left to their fate“, said EFE by phone from one of the enclave’s hospitals, Dr. Medhat Abbas, who is also in charge of the sector’s Ministry of Health.

Almost without water, electricity, fuel and internet.Night shifts are a problem in operating rooms, where doctors rely on cell phone lights to see.

“Without a doubt, what is most needed is fuel, medicines and water for drinking,” Abbas said, noting that they have water that is undrinkable thanks to the fact that the hospital where he is located has several wells, but it is so salty that it is only used for washing. Patients.

He explained that what they need most in the medical center is fuel, medicine and drinking water in the hospital, where hundreds of patients crowd the corridors. A danger that has particularly hit intensive care units, operating rooms and emergency departments.

The shortage of drinking water is of particular concern to international organizations such as Save the childrenwhich stresses that there is concern about the “risk of dehydration” among minors and their exposure to diseases transmitted through contaminated water.

Added to this is that at least 5,500 women are expected to give birth next month in the Palestinian enclave, where the situation shows no signs of improvement as Israel prepares for a ground invasion in response to the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that killed 1,400 people in Israel.

And the humanitarian aid with food and medicine, among other things, that entered Gaza this Saturday through the Rafah crossing, which borders Egypt and is the only way out of the strip since the other crossings border Israel, is still a patchwork. since there were only 20 trucks with aid for a population of more than 2 million people, of which more than a million people are internally displaced in the south of the enclave.

In this sense, the Gaza Ministry of Health announced this week that it has transferred 60 patients with renal failure from north to south Gaza through bombing, although this increases the load on the existing dialysis machines in the southern part of the strip, which operate 24 hours a day.

And he warned that if these machines had to stop working due to lack of fuel and electricity, it would be a death sentence for patients who need dialysis.

In this context, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health, at least five centers are completely out of action due to lack of supplies and airstrikes in the sector: Al Durkha Children’s Hospital, Al Karama Hospital, Al Wafa Hospital and rehabilitation.

The Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Center, the only center offering cancer services in Gaza, and the Psychiatric Center were partially closed.

Fifteen days of war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza killed at least 4,469 people, more than 70% of whom were minors, women and the elderly, and 14,000 were injured in air attacks; in a situation that is likely to worsen due to Israel’s announced ground intervention in the enclave, which will undoubtedly worsen hospital conditions even further.
